Meet Capt. Steve Friedman.
Capt. Steve Friedman grew up spending his summers playing in the waters near his grandparents’ house in central Illinois. Years later, while completing graduate classes in New Mexico, he spent his days along the banks of the famed San Juan River in pursuit of rainbow and brown trout. When he returned to his hometown, Chicago, he continued to fish the waters of Lake Michigan and spent his vacations fishing all over Florida where his love for saltwater fishing blossomed.
His zeal for fishing took him next to Vail, Colorado, where he guided anglers down the white waters of the Colorado, Eagle and Roaring Fork Rivers, hot on the trail of brown, rainbow and brook trout. Wanting to fish year round, Steve soon made the decision to permanently relocate to Islamorada, Florida and guide full-time in the Florida Keys where he now lives with his wife Kristine and two teenage children — Benjamin and Sidney.
Capt. Steve’s love of the water ultimately led him to actively work to save it. As the former Commodore of the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association, member of Captains for Clean Water, founding board member of Florida Bay Forever, former Advisory Council member of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and former member of the Islamorada Near Shore Water Regulation Committee, Steve continues to fight for our community’s lifeblood — our water.
With his two decades of running a small business in the Keys coupled with a Bachelor's Degree from Drake University in Spanish and Latin American Studies and a Master’s from the University of New Mexico in Latin American Studies (with an emphasis in political science and community and regional planning), Capt. Steve is ready to take on the responsibilities of serving on our Islamorada Village Council.
